The first story is about connecting the dots.
-connect : join together so as to provide access and communication.
-dot : a small round mark or spot.
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.
-drop out : abandon a course of study.
-drop-in : visited on an informal basis without booking or appointments.
So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born.
-before : during the period of time preceding (a particular event, date, or time).
